Established in 2007, Save the Beach Maldives (STBM) began as a youth movement in Villimale with the objective of preserving the natural beaches on the island. In 2014, STBM obtained NGO registration and expanded its activities to encompass coral restoration, reef research, and scientific expeditions.
STBM remains dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the beaches and reefs of Villimale’ and the Maldives. The organization’s primary aims include conducting reef research, implementing and enhancing coral restoration projects throughout the Maldives, and providing training to local communities on waste management and conservation practices through active and passive coral restoration. STBM has already initiated several sustainable long-term projects for waste management and coral reef conservation on several islands. The organization also seeks to improve the knowledge of island communities, enabling them to safeguard their islands from the effects of climate change and human activities.
