Scientists from around the world, alongside fisheries and conservation organisations, raised concerns over the government’s recent decision to issue new licenses for longline fishing. The Maldives, internationally recognised for its sustainable fishing practices, particularly the one-by-one tuna fishery, has long been a model for responsible fishing. In the letter to the Maldivian government, 145 signatories urged careful consideration of the potential ecological and economic impacts of reintroducing longline fishing.
